Abstract

In this paper I am going to develop the following argument: it is a good idea allowing children to play in historic sites in order to pursue two main aims. The first one is to make the cultural heritage a setting for leisure and delight by offering multiple choices for entertainment. The second one is to let the children learn and interpret the deeper meanings of these sites through an interactive and practical attitude. These ideas come from a strongly different perception of the heritage, its values and uses. It deals with the possibility of making the children feel free to interact with the historic sites by participating in many activities, playing, talking, touching and exploring. In the following pages I am going to explain two educative experiences developed in Alcalá de Henares, a city that has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
