This paper reflects on the need to foster contemporary Arts Education through the funding of educational programs in order to promote quality artistic and cultural mediation processes within schools. In this sense, we analyse the paradigmatic case of New York city, whose political decisions regarding arts constitute a unique example worldwide. An annual budget of $23 million covers the needs and possibilities that contemporary art offers to local public schools. It is a local government initiative since national education laws do not include artistic programmes in Schools and Colleges and these are based on standardized assessments of progress in schools and rankings which determine the “quality” of these centres.
