The Creative Musical Experience in Integrated Teaching: The Soundscape as a Link Between Disciplines

Abstract

This article provides a rationale for why and how the soundscape
can act as an articulating axis for integrated teaching
in Primary Education when musical creativity is understood
as knowledge practice—listening, performing, improvising,
and composing. A theoretical-critical and integrative
approach is adopted, combining conceptual mapping and
narrative synthesis of literature in Spanish and English, and
is translated into a propositional design: an iSTEAM model
centered on environmental sound. The results include: (a)
a clarification of the construct “musical creativity” from
process-oriented and situated perspectives; (b) an educational
reading of the soundscape and acoustic ecology with
transferable procedures (soundwalks, listening journals,
perceptual profiles) and an ethics of sonic citizenship; and
(c) a proposal of three integrative activities with formative
assessment tools, shared quality criteria, and progression
across cycles. The proposal avoids “integration without
art” and facilitates meaningful curricular connections with
modest resources. Future lines of research are outlined to
assess impact on learning, well-being, and coexistence.

  • Ignacio Nieto-Miguel, University of Burgos

    Professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Burgos. He holds a degree in Primary Education and a PhD in Musicology. He holds advanced degrees in piano and professional degrees in singing, harpsichord, and music theory. He combines his teaching with conducting the University of Burgos Orchestra. His main lines of research are: music as an educational tool in primary education, vocal and choral education in the classroom, and musical heritage and education. He has given lectures, courses, and concerts throughout Europe, the Americas, and Africa. He has taught at the University of Valladolid, the International University of Valencia, and the University of the Republic (Uruguay). He is a member of the Group of Researchers (GIR) "Arts Education: Processes, Spaces, and Practices."

    PhD candidate in specific didactics at the University of Burgos. Director, music teacher, Coordinator of Information, Communication and Learning Technologies at the Eria-Jamuz CRA (León). University Career Award at the 12th Social Council Awards. Santander Progress Scholarship for academic excellence. Master's Degree in Educational Research and Innovation, graduated in primary and early childhood education teaching from the University of Burgos. Professional music degree specializing in transverse flute. Award in the Regino Sainz de la Maza competition: soloist, duo and trio categories in 2018 and award in soloist category in 2016. Collaborator with the Municipal Music Band of La Bañeza, the City Band of Burgos and the ATEMUB association.
