Arts Education and Health: Rethinking Art in School as a Healthy Habit

According to scientific evidence, participation in artistic activities—whether active or receptive—constitutes a health promoting behavior. These practices can be regarded as comparable to other healthy habits such as physical activity, a balanced diet, or contact with nature. According to the World Health Organization and numerous studies, participation in artistic and cultural activities during childhood and adolescence promotes well being, strengthens self esteem, improves self regulation, and contributes to mental health. The aim of this article is to propose a conceptual framework that, grounded in scientific evidence and an analysis of the sociopolitical context, supports the recognition of participation in the arts as a healthy habit that should be fostered during the school years. Based on a narrative review of scientific studies and documents on strategies and policies, this framework for validation is developed. In conclusion, it is argued that schools should ensure the presence of arts education as an essential component in the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
