Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential aspect of education, as access to knowledge largely occurs through written text. However, its traditional assessment has focused primarily on the explicit retrieval of information, thereby limiting the development of higher-order cognitive processes. This study aims to analyze reading comprehension through visible thinking strategies and cooperative learning, specifically through the compare–and–contrast thinking routine. The research was conducted with a sample of 50 third-grade primary education students, organized into eleven groups of three to four members. The students read three versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood and subsequently completed a graphic organizer based on the compare–and–contrast routine. This thinking routine requires students to compare, analyze, and reason about the similarities and differences between the texts. The results show that the use of the graphic organizer facilitated a deeper understanding of the reading material. It is concluded that the compare–and–contrast thinking routine, integrated into cooperative learning dynamics, constitutes an effective tool for the development of reading comprehension, promoting a more reflective and complex approach in contrast to traditional methods.
